Art as part of the Great Mystery

My art, in all of the various incarnations, is in process.  The visual piece of the iceberg has been and is being learned mainly through experience and reflection.  Action or Experience - Reflection - action are the circle that goes around in the creative process.

I am grateful for brief informal education with a few gifted artists; Sally Miller and Zolton Szabo in watercolor; Andy Braitman in oils, Julie Dean and Charlotte Myers in pottery.  Their art inspires me to continue to doodle.  They are far beyond the doodling stage and into the mystery of mastery.

My art is an expression of the energy focused by faith in the inclusive, radical, "More Than" which some folks call God.  I paint, play with photographs or clay, paste images, because the bring something together in a new way helps me to pay attention, to see, and to experience more deeply the present moment.  Photography, clay, painting invites me into the beauty of a small droplet of life as if for the first time.  Art invites me to notice the curl of a flower petal or the way a shadow plays across the side of a child in water.  Noticing the beauty in these small details connects me to the Great Mystery, to the abundance available in in each tiny droplet of experience.   If my art ever helps others in that direction, I am glad.

I have a life beyond visual arts with my family, friends and the delightful people of Presbyterian Hospital's Chaplaincy, Health Ministry and Pastoral Education department.
